Many persons view postpartum depression as a problem affecting just the mother. This, however, is not the case. The entire family experiences relationship changes that affect family dynamics considerably. Depressed moms who fail to get treatment frequently place their babies at risk for severe or fatal delays in growth and development.
The psychiatric name for this complex problem is nonorganic failure to thrive. Nonorganic means that there is no medical cause for the infant’s delays. As a result of the mother’s postpartum depression, she frequently stops meeting the baby’s nutritional and psychological requirements. Although the baby may cry for food at the beginning, he or she often loses interest and quits interacting with other people. This condition may cause malnutrition, starvation, or even death.
Doctors use developmental charts to follow a baby’s physical growth in height, weight, and head size. If the infant is healthy at birth, his or her size will be within the normal range on the growth charts. If the baby begins to experience severe developmental delays, the problem will be apparent by tracking his or her development with normal growth charts. Once an infant’s growth is lower than the fifth percentile, physicians become worried.
Other symptoms may become evident before an infant’s growth problems reach this crisis stage. The majority of babies who grow normally are interested in their surroundings. In contrast, babies who do not thrive have little or no curiosity about their environment. These infants do not usually make noise or talk; they have quit attempting to relate with their caretakers.
How much of a problem is this condition? If untreated, a child may starve to death. Even if the baby grows enough to remain alive, his or her heart, bone, and mind cannot develop properly. Additionally, even when they do get help, these children do not “catch up” entirely. They frequently acquire social problems or eating conditions, even when they finally start getting their needs met.
Babies who failure to thrive typically become gravely sick from starvation. They are often in the hospital for weeks or months. Sometimes, they get so weak that taking a bottle is exhausting. They receive feedings through a tube placed in the stomach, or even in their veins to receive nutrition!
The most tragic aspect of this condition is that it can be easily prevented. If moms with postpartum depression identify their depression when it begins, they are able to seek help and do not have to subject their fragile babies to these horrific dangers. In fact, studies have shown that nine-tenths of those mothers who suffer from depression and get treatment will experience significant improvement!
A number of approaches are used to treat postpartum depression. Many physicians use medications, such as antidepressants. These medicines are expensive. They should also be avoided in nursing mothers. Furthermore, antidepressants sometimes cause suicidal thoughts; these medications must be used with great care.
Usually, physicians recommend psychotherapy instead of or in addition to medications. Psychotherapy, however, can be expensive. In addition, it can be time-consuming, and several weeks may pass before this treatment begins to help. Regrettably, depending on the severity of the woman’s depression, this much time may be too much to prevent harm to the infant. If the baby begins to experience growth delays, additional therapies may be needed.
Fortunately, other non-medicinal therapy approaches can be used. Two revolutionary, beneficial methods that usually offer positive outcomes much more quickly than psychotherapy, and are not nearly as dangerous as medication, are Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP and hypnosis for depression. NLP and hypnosis usually start to work after only one treatment. In addition, they are much less expensive than alternative methods.
Moms who suspect they have postpartum depression need to get treatment immediately so that their babies do not develop dangerous growth delays. The severity of the effects on the baby mandates that the treatment work quickly, and have a high rate of effectiveness. States throughout the country have outlawed smoking in public areas. Numerous business organizations have mandated smoking cessation, and are punishing employees who smoke while working. Persons who smoke subject themselves to cold weather and the elements, and smoke away as hurriedly as they are able in order to return to work.
In some cities, smoking is a behavior as negatively perceived as taking illegal drugs. Since the public has become so educated about stop smoking benefits, a significant number are doing their best to find ways to quit smoking.
The addiction of smoking is made up of three components:
1. Smoking for relaxation and pleasure is about 45 percent of the reason that people continue to smoke.
2. People also smoke because they unconsciously associate agreeable environments or behaviors with cigarettes. Then, every time they get into that environment, they get a craving. For instance, an individual may come to associate smoking with their bedtime ritual. They will come to associate smoking with sleep so strongly that it is almost impossible to go to sleep without having a cigarette first. Example: If you watch TV and smoke, the smoking will become a conditioned response to watching TV. So each time you watch TV, you’ll feel an urge to smoke. This is about 45 percent of the smoking addiction.
3. The final reason people continue to smoke is that they become physically addicted to Nicotine. Physical addiction is about 10 percent of the reason why people continue to smoke. When people quit smoking, all of the Nicotine is gone from their bodies after about three days!
Numerous alternatives have been developed to help individuals find ways to quit smoking. The least expensive way to quit smoking, covered through the majority of insurance agencies, is the nicotine patch. These easily applied patches are worn for one day and can be secreted beneath the wearer’s clothes. The drawback to these patches, however, is that this method is not very useful. Since nicotine patches only help treat the physiological addiction, which accounts for just one-tenth of the smoking habit, only about seven percent of the people who use this method will succeed.
A very similar degree of effectiveness is characteristic of nicotine gum or lozenges. Less than one in ten clients who use these strategies succeeds with these approaches to quit smoking for six months or more. Additionally, these items sometimes cause side effects. Nicotine gum or lozenges, can be irritating to an individual’s mouth tissue and lips, while many people report skin rashes beneath the patch. Again, these items merely address the physical addiction, which only makes up about 10% of the habit.
Another approach is the implementation of psychotherapy and smoking cessation programs. Such courses include cognitive therapy together with thorough education concerning the negative outcomes of smoking. These approaches are three times as successful as nicotine replacement therapies; approximately 22 percent of these people will succeed in quitting for at least six months.
Numerous smokers have utilized laser treatment programs to help quit smoking. This approach is sometimes paid for by insurance, although it is new. Experimental trials held by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, have found that the laser treatments are no more successful than placebo. (Placebo is the result that happens when people think they are receiving a treatment, but really are not.)

Male clients seem to have a higher success rate with stop smoking hypnosis than female patients do. One advantage of self hypnosis stop smoking, however, is that, unlike those who utilize nicotine replacement as strategies to quit smoking, there are no problematic side effects.
Another benefit of hypnotherapy is that it works on the nine-tenths facet of the problem that is psychological, versus the other approaches that merely attack the one-tenth component of the problem that is physical. For this reason, hypnosis has a significantly greater success rate than the aforementioned approaches to smoke cessation. Customary hypnosis strategies can yield a 35% effectiveness rate, while Ericksonian hypnotherapy can offer a fifty percent or greater success rate.
A more recent, revolutionary, and significantly more effective method that encourages persons to kick a cigarette habit is Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP. This strategy is far more successful than conventional styles of quit smoking hypnosis since it does not require users to rely on post-hypnotic suggestions at all. Most people, particularly people who tend to be analytical in nature, do not easily accept post-hypnotic suggestions. Through the use of NLP, the person’s unconscious mind is trained to use the identical mental patterns that are creating the mental addiction to smoking, to eradicate it!
A well-designed NLP smoking cessation strategy developed by a trained NLP professional can result in an effectiveness rate of up to 70% or more.
